In a graphite cuvette, the analyzed sample is heated and atomized. The liquid drop of the sample is applied using an automatic or manual dispenser.

To increase the durability and prevent the diffusion of vapors through the walls of the cuvette, it is covered with a pyrolytic coating (a layer of gas-tight pyrocarbon).

To protect against burnout in air, graphite cuvettes are placed in a semi-hermetic volume purged with an argon flow.
